This weekend both sides of my family gathered to join me in committing my ways to the Lord and to say, “see you later.” After dinner Saturday night, at my request most everyone shared their personal story of how they said “Yes!” to Jesus when they heard him for the first time inviting them to “Come and follow me.”
Come and follow. Come is the first step, but follow is forever. I pray I’m never content with simply coming to Jesus one time years ago. I pray each day I’m filled with a boundless desire to press on and follow Jesus wherever he calls me. Tonight I am counting the cost, but I know he is worth it. He is always worth it.
This morning I had a pastor anoint me in prayer, begging God on my behalf that all those I encounter would be rescued from a forever apart from God. Wow. Holy Spirit, let it be so.
“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
Here are a few things I have chosen to ask of the Father from his Word for such a time as this. What might he have you ask of him on your behalf or someone else’s today?
Father, help me seek first your Kingdom and your righteousness.
Help me acknowledge you in all my ways as I trust you with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding.
Help me keep my eyes on you, the one who is invisible.
Help me rely on your unfailing love.
Help me forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.
[1 Corinthians 2:2]
Help me go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Help me teach these new disciples to obey all the commands you have given me. Help me be sure of this: you are with me always.
Help me bring good news to the poor, comfort the brokenhearted, and proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.
Help me grow as I learn to know you better and better. Strengthen me with all your glorious power so I will have all the endurance and patience I need. May I be filled with joy, always thanking you, Father.
Help me proclaim this message as clearly as I should. Help me live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.
Help me live a life worthy of your call. Please give me the power to accomplish all the good things my faith prompts me to do.
[2 Thessalonians 1:11-12]
Help me believe in you, the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing. Even when there is no reason for hope, help me keep on hoping. May my faith never weaken. May I never waver in believing your promise. Help my faith grow stronger, and in this, help me bring you glory. Help me be fully convinced you are able to do whatever you promise.
“My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!”
